Obstacles to Church Growth Overcome

"So built we the wall; and all the wall was joined together unto the half thereof: for the people had a mind to work" (Neh. 4:6). Inspiring letters are received by The Mother Church from its branch churches, showing growth, progress, unity, and a desire to work.

The members of a church in a large metropolitan area in northwestern United States were considering whether the church was still needed in that location. Through prayer, however, came a change of consciousness from discouragement to a right expectation of good. This church writes: "We ... faced each of the arguments that presented themselves. Their nothingness has been better realized and replaced with a higher concept of the spiritual facts of Church and its activities, and as a result, the Sunday School and Wednesday evening testimony meetings have been resumed. We have literally started over .... Each one joyously accepted the office to which he was elected, knowing that every member was being guided by divine Mind in this selection. We now have more children enrolled in Sunday School than we have had for some time, and the Sunday services are better attended. There is definitely a greater sense of interest and enthusiasm reflected by all."

Many growing and active churches are located in new residential sections. One such church in a large city has a membership of over six hundred with four hundred children in the Sunday School. This church writes: "For about seven months of the year we have found it necessary to accommodate from thirty to eighty persons in the foyer of our church at each Sunday service. This means that the ushers place extra chairs in the foyer before the service begins and remove them immediately after it before the congregation leaves the auditorium."
