It has been many years since the following experience occurred. It led to my becoming acquainted with Christian Science and later to my embracing its glorious truths. I met with an accident which all but crushed the small bones in one foot. Although I sought aid from various schools of medicine, they profited me nothing. After years of suffering I traveled to a distant city, where I sought the services of a noted surgeon. After X rays of the foot were made, he said that the bones were carious, and he recommended amputation of the foot.

Many years previous to this experience my mother had been healed in Christian Science of inflammatory rheumatism after a physician had given her but a few days in which to live, and he had advised her to have Christian Science treatment. I now sought the advice of my mother, and after I had told her of the surgeon's verdict, she exclaimed, "Man's extremity is God's opportunity." She assured me that God alone was my physician and that all would be well. I consulted a practitioner who gave me every hope which my troubled heart could wish for and instructed me in the study of the weekly Lesson-Sermons in the Christian Science Quarterly. With a great sense of buoyancy I determined to learn of God and His healing power.

It was April and spring was coming in all its loveliness. The songs of the blackbirds and meadow larks filled the air, and there was in my heart a song of gratitude to God. One day I was called upon to exert myself far beyond what I had previously thought possible. Entirely oblivious of the fact that I had just been hobbling about, I ran as fast as my legs could carry me in order to accomplish what was expected of me. Then I stood quietly for a few moments. Something momentous had happened. I removed my shoe and found the foot as normal as the other. Shedding tears of joy, I began "walking, and leaping, and praising God" like the man healed by Peter (Acts 3:8). I had touched the hem of the garment of Christ, Truth, and was free!
