LAWFUL AFFECTION

It is natural to have friends and to love them sincerely. When the human sense of affection is based on the understanding of divine Love, friendships multiply and expand and can be enjoyed without the misunderstandings and tensions that sometimes seem to disrupt human relationships.

The Bible mentions several individuals whom Jesus loved. But he never lost sight of the true nature of love and its source. When he was asked what is the first commandment of all, Jesus identified it as a commandment to love. "Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind, and with all thy strength: this is the first commandment. And the second is like, namely this, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself" (Mark 12:30, 31).

God's commandments are natural. In divine Science, where man is seen as the outcome or expression of God, it becomes clear that obedience to God's law is natural and inevitable and that disobedience is impossible, since the law of God constitutes man's fundamental nature and establishes his relationship to God and to His universe.
