THE LAW OF KINDNESS

What is kindness? It is a quality of divine Love, and may be defined as friendliness, consideration, good will. In the book of Proverbs the Preacher refers to kindness in his description of a virtuous woman. He presents her as alert, industrious, and unselfish, and then he declares (31: 26), "She openeth her mouth with wisdom; and in her tongue is the law of kindness."

The law of kindness is a law of God, and the man of God's creating never ceases to express good will or kindly affection, because it is an eternal and indestructible quality of his being. The man of God cannot be unkind. The law of kindness governs his thoughts and acts. The recognition of the ever-present operation of this law enriches human experience, and brings into it a great healing and harmonizing influence.

One of the early definitions of "kind" is "of good birth or breeding." We can see, therefore, that true kindness is not something which can be put on like a polish, but is genuine goodness inherited from divine Love. Through the consistent practice of the scientific law of kindness in his daily living, the Christian Scientist identifies himself with the Christ, his true spiritual nature. Like the rays of the sun, which bring light and warmth to the whole earth, regardless of color, creed, or position, so the law of kindness and goodness is impartial and universal in scope. Kindness flows out from the mentality endowed with the Christ in a steady stream with unlimited strength and healing effects.
