RETREAT AND GO FORWARD

Mary Baker Eddy writes in "Unity of Good" (p. 61): "The mutations of mortal sense are the evening and the morning of human thought,—the twilight and dawn of earthly vision, which precedeth the nightless radiance of divine Life. Human perception, advancing toward the apprehension of its nothingness, halts, retreats, and again goes forward; but the divine Principle and Spirit and spiritual man are unchangeable,— neither advancing, retreating, nor halting."

Often in human experience we find ourselves in need of retreating from the mutations of mortal sense. If we are Christian Scientists we find safety by retreating from false material beliefs into true spiritual thoughts from God. Sometimes in our march forward we need only to pause briefly to gain true spiritual consciousness and the realization of God's peace. At other times we may need to wait on God, watch with Him, and keep our thought so alerted that no enemy can find entrance into consciousness.

Our revered Leader was conscious that, evil would claim to hinder our spiritual progress and that longer or shorter periods of spiritual refreshment would be needed before the waters of mortal mind divided, enabling us to go forward. She declares in "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" (p. 323): "Through the wholesome chastisements of Love, we are helped onward in the march towards righteousness, peace, and purity, which are the landmarks of Science. Beholding the infinite tasks of truth, we pause,—wait on God. Then we push onward, until boundless thought walks enraptured, and conception unconfined is winged to reach the divine glory."
