Our Radio Programs Bring Fruitage

Victoria, Australia

The recorded programs prepared in The Mother Church continue to be broadcast through Melbourne Station 3XY. One listener made a request for the services of a Christian Science practitioner. This office arranged for a practitioner to visit the inquirer.

A radio interview in Sydney with Will B. Davis, C. S. B., of Chicago, was broadcast over Station 3XY Melbourne. This radio interview of twenty minutes made a splendid opening for Mr. Davis' series of lectures. The press reported next morning that over two thousand people attended the first lecture.

While responses as a result of radio broadcasts are not numerous, verbal reports which reach us show that the programs are being very much appreciated, especially in the country districts where there is no opportunity to regularly attend services in a Christian Science church. This appreciation has been shown practically in financial support. One of our Assistants tells us that a clergyman known to him listens regularly to our programs, and it may safely be assumed that the truths expressed do leaven his sermons. Besides, he receives correct information about Christian Science each time he listens.

Our financial report shows that the increase in practical support of these broadcasts by our churches, societies, and individuals is most gratifying.

Maryland

The programs transcribed in The Mother Church edifice are broadcast over more than six hundred radio stations throughout the world. During the year seven Maryland stations used these disks as regular features.

Live-talent programs are being developed in areas where free time can be obtained through direct negotiation with stations or through ministerial associations. These live-talent programs have an effective local interest. Following the first presentation of a live-talent program over a station, the personnel in charge asked the Christian Scientist to come back again soon, as our program was one of the best prepared, timed, and delivered on the air.

Radio stations generously provide free time for lecture spot announcements, interviews with lecturers, "The Christian Science Monitor Views the News" feature, and the reporting of our Annual Meeting.

In 1949 just one radio station reluctantly agreed to broadcast an announcement of the Annual Meeting. However, this year fourteen radio stations and one television station carried a report of this event.

Our radio programs inspire confidence in God's willingness and ability to heal all manner of discord, giving comfort and assurance to our members and to non-Scientists. Results from this activity are so heartening that our efforts are being accelerated to reach a greater number of non-Scientists.

One listener writes: "I know of endless benefit the programs have been to non-Scientists as well as to myself. Many of my nonchurch-going friends tune m, and my non-Scientist family never lets me forget to turn on the program."

A librarian reported that a lady hearing one of our programs over the Columbia "Church of the Air" called at the Reading' Room and borrowed the first section of the Braille edition of "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy.

A church member told of informing a friend about our healing programs. The friend, greatly disturbed over the condition of a dear relative, gained composure from listening to the program and recommended Christian Science to this relative.

A librarian reports the purchase of Science and Health and other literature and attendance at church services by one whose interest was aroused by our radio programs.

Louisiana

Radio Station WWL broadcasts the Columbia "Church of the Air" program, in which Christian Science churches participate in turn with other denominations. The wide broadcasting radius of this station makes reception possible to the greater part of Louisiana.

Letters of appreciation of our programs and requests for literature have been received. These letters and requests are always given special attention.

Christian Scientists are privileged to give metaphysical support to Christian Science programs broadcast in their respective districts. Our beloved Leader writes (The First Church of Christ, Scientist, and Miscellany, p. 245): "Let the voice of Truth and Love be heard above the dire din of mortal nothingness, and the majestic march of Christian Science go on ad infinitum, praising God, doing the works of primitive Christianity, and enlightening the world."
