After many years of poor health...
After many years of poor health and much discouragement I realized that material methods were not able to solve my problems, and I felt sure that if I was to be healed, God must heal me. The thought came to me that I had a God-given right to be free.
My sister asked me if I would talk to a very loving woman who could make one feel much comforted. I consented and found that this woman was a student of Christian Science. Her spiritual understanding made clear to me the meaning of these two Bible verses: "Ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free" (John 8:32), and, "We 'are confident, I say, and willing rather to be absent from the body, and to be present with the Lord" (II Cor. 5:8).
I began studying the Lesson-Sermon in the Christian Science Quarterly and attending services in a Church of Christ, Scientist, putting my rather frail nine-year-old son in the Sunday School. The testimonies of healing at the Wednesday evening meetings and the solos and hymns at the Sunday services were particularly comforting. The loving and reassuring manner of the people who attended was uplifting. No condition was allowed to keep me from the church services or my boy from Sunday School. We were so glad to be conscious of God; it was our first real happiness.
I became happy and healthy, and my son became strong and active in school. Through the work that I was able to do I purchased a much-desired house. Then I was led to join the church and support our Cause in order to show gratitude for what it had done and was doing for us. Class instruction soon followed.
I express gratitude to God for our revered Leader, Mrs. Eddy, whose unselfishness in sharing with the world her spiritual understanding of God and His creation enables us to follow in the footsteps of our Master, Christ Jesus.—(Mrs.) Sybil E. Ashinhurst, Los Angeles, California.
