In our daily activities we hear...

In our daily activities we hear and read much about compromise. Our Leader, Mrs. Eddy, uses the word compromise twice in "Miscellaneous Writings." On page 53, in answer to the question, "Do you sometimes find it advisable to use medicine to assist in producinng a cure, when it is difficult to start the patient's recovery?" she states, "You only weaken your power to heal through Mind, by any compromise with matter; which is virtually acknowledging that under difficulties the former is not equal to the latter." And on page 101 she says, "The scientific sense of being which establishes harmony, enters into no compromise with finiteness and feebleness."

These words of Mrs. Eddy's were of great interest to me following an experience I had. Shortly after retiring one night, I awakened in extreme pain. As we are taught to do in Christian Science, I immediately denied the suggestion of pain and declared the allness of God, good. The pain continued, however, and mortal mind suggested that I simply could not endure it and that I must have some relief. Then the suggestions of compromise with error began to come. The first one was that I get up and walk around to relieve the pain, but I denied the suggestion and declared that my relief would come from Principle, God. The next compromise offered was that I move about in bed to gain relief. I remained adamant in my stand that Truth would release me from the pain and rejected the suggestion that relief could come through physical movement. Soon the pain was gone, and I was free. I expressed my gratitude to God, protected the healing by knowing that it could not be reversed, and went back to sleep. The next morning I awoke at my usual hour, feeling as well as ever.

Reviewing the situation, I remember that early in the experience I was rejoicing that I would have a healing to share with the congregation of my branch Church of Christ, Scientist, at a testimony meeting. While error was setting up its case against me and the material senses were testifying to great pain I was rejoicing in my expected healing. I recall singing to myself Mrs. Eddy's hymn beginning, "Shepherd, show me how to go" (Poems, p. 14), and then praying that God would teach me how to gather the angel messages that were unfolding in my consciousness and would show me how to sow these truths among His children, how to feed His sheep with this spiritual food.
