Until early in 1951 I knew nothing...

Until early in 1951 I knew nothing of Christian Science. I was a complete invalid and had been bedridden for four and a half years as the result of an accident which caused a very complicated fracture of the lower part of my spine and left me paralyzed from my hips downward. After months in the hospital I was told by the doctor to be very courageous because I had developed an incurable disease of the spinal cord known as progressive multiple sclerosis, commonly called creeping paralysis. He told me to accept God's will and pray, as medical science could not do any more for me. I was sent home the next day.

In February, 1951, I listened to a radio program and later wrote to the speaker, asking if an answer could be given over the air. It was, and my name and condition were mentioned. Listening in to that program was a Christian Scientist, and of all the millions of listeners he alone was led not only to write me but to send some Christian Science literature.

I decided to try to understand the meaning of the still small voice, of which this man wrote. One night after reading the ninety-first Psalm I dreamed that someone told me very distinctly to sit up, adding, "You can, if you will." I awoke and put on my bed lamp, thinking someone was in the room with me. Seeing that I was alone, I went back to sleep, and in the morning I forgot my dream.
