PROVING OUR FAITH

When the centurion besought Jesus to cure his servant who lay at home sick of the palsy, the Master expressed willingness to go to his home at once and heal the servant. The centurion's reply to Jesus was one of humility and of profound faith when he said (Matt. 8:8), "Lord, I am not worthy that thou shouldest come under my roof: but speak the word only, and my servant shall be healed." We read that Jesus marveled and said, "I have not found so great faith, no, not in Israel." And the servant was healed.

This incident has often reminded the writer of an instantaneous healing which she experienced at the beginning of her study in Christian Science. One night while she was staying in the home of friends, a very painful condition of the throat awakened her. By morning her jaws were set, and she could not close them or utter a sound. Medical help was suggested immediately, but her reply to her friends was written on a piece of paper in these few words: "Please take me to a Christian Science practitioner. I must be healed at once." The request was complied with graciously and promptly. An instantaneous healing was experienced a few minutes after she entered the practitioner's office.

This healing seemed incredible to those who witnessed it. We may well ask this question: "What brought about this healing?" The writer's childlike faith that God would heal her contributed greatly to it. In "Rudimental Divine Science" Mary Baker Eddy writes (p. 11), "Sickness is the schoolmaster, leading you to Christ; first to faith in Christ; next to belief in God as omnipotent; and finally to the understanding of God and man in Christian Science, whereby you learn that God is good, and in Science man is His likeness, the forever reflection of goodness."
