ATMOSPHERE IS SPIRITUAL

One sometimes hears the remark, "If only I could live and work in a more harmonious atmosphere, my problem would be solved." While it is certainly right to desire and experience a happy and harmonious atmosphere, Christian Science teaches that its attainment lies not so much in a change of material environment as in the spiritualization of individual human thought. It is therefore within the realm of consciousness that our problems are solved and harmony is attained.

A dictionary definition of "atmosphere" is "a surrounding or pervading influence or condition." A study of this definition in the light of the spiritual truths revealed in Christian Science brings the conviction that since God, Spirit, is infinite, the only real atmosphere must be entirely spiritual. And since man is God's spiritual reflection, he cannot in reality be influenced or conditioned by aught but the one infinite Spirit, God.

In "Miscellaneous Writings" Mary Baker Eddy writes (p. 86), "The atmosphere of mortal mind constitutes our mortal environment." Mortal mind, or the supposititious mind of a mortal, believes that life exists in and of matter and sees the objectification of its belief in what it calls a material environment. Thus the atmosphere of this environment is but the suppositional influence of false mortal belief.
