Through my earnest study of the textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy, and the Lesson-Sermons in the Christian Science Quarterly the desire for social drinking, smoking, and gambling disappeared.

During the first year of my study headaches, constipation, and colds faded into nothingness. There soon followed the healing of severe pains in the legs which had caused me many sleepless nights since childhood. At that time the doctors had diagnosed the trouble as growing pains, but when I became an adult, they had no name for it or any cure. I awoke one morning to realize I was no longer suffering and could not remember when the healing had taken place.

At one time a business trip took me to several foreign islands, and in obedience to the law I was vaccinated. One evening I retired to my hotel room, feeling very ill and feverish; the vaccination had become infected. My first thought was to call a practitioner, but on referring to The Christian Science Journal I found none registered on the island. I immediately turned from the suggestion that I was alone and ill to the realization that God, good, is ever present, and that Spirit is the only creator. The nearness and dearness of God became an actuality, and I was at peace. The fever disappeared almost immediately, and that night I slept quietly; in the meantime I had written to a practitioner for help, and by the second day the pain was all gone.
