I was tongue-tied when a child...
I was tongue-tied when a child, and although this was partly overcome as I grew up, I stammered for many years after. I had been kept out of school until I could speak fairly well, and so I was older than the rest of the children in my classes. That made me self-conscious, and it was a deterrent to my progress. I kept out of conversations as much as possible because it was difficult for me to express myself.
Shortly after I married, this problem became almost unbearable, and a relative of mine, seeing my need, told me of Christian Science and showed me how to study the weekly Lesson-Sermons in the Christian Science Quarterly. I can never be too grateful for the interest that was shown me by this Christian Scientist. Through reading and applying what I read I finally overcame the stammering entirely, and to my surprise, at a Wednesday evening testimony meeting I forgot my self-consciousness and other difficulties and got up and praised God for all His goodness to me.
Since I have known of Christian Science I have had many healings. At one time I had some teeth extracted painlessly without taking gas or having injections. One healing took longer than the others, because I was not putting into practice the rules of this Science. The case was never diagnosed, and although my husband and his mother wanted me to call a physician, I did not do so. However, I was fearful of becoming an invalid. The first lines in the Preface to Science and Health by Mrs. Eddy (p. vii), "To those leaning on the sustaining infinite, to-day is big with blessings." awakened me and destroyed my fear. From then on I knew that all was well. Christian Science healed me, and I became more active than I had ever been.
