LOVE IN ACTION
One of the greatest contributions of Christianity to the welfare of mankind is the knowledge that, in the words of St. John, "God is love; and he that dwelleth in love dwelleth in God, and God in him" (I John 4:16). Christian Science reiterates this profound truth. Mary Baker Eddy writes (Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures, p. 312), "People go into ecstasies over the sense of a corporeal Jehovah, though with scarcely a spark of love in their hearts; yet God is Love, and without Love, God, immortality cannot appear."
Much has been written in the New Testament and by our Leader, Mrs. Eddy, about love, what it means and how necessary it is to the salvation of mankind. The term Love as a synonym for God indicates to humanity the goodness, the loving-kindness, and the tender creativeness of Deity. It indicates His perfect satisfaction with His divinely made creation. It is apparent to spiritually enlightened thinkers that sickness, sin, and death cannot be the products of God, Love, whose love for His children is manifested as goodness immeasurably above even the highest concept of love known by mankind.
God holds man in an eternal relationship of loving-kindness. God provides illimitable good for all, giving man health, abundance, joy, peace. It is readily admitted that these divine gifts seem signally absent much of the time from the experience of mankind. How then can one accept the fact that the creator of the universe, the All-power that maintains and directs every detail of true existence, is Love and reconcile this truth with war, evil, sickness, sin, lack, all of which seem so apparent in human existence?
