For some while after I had taken...
For some while after I had taken up the study of Christian Science, I did not understand how it could heal physical conditions. I did not then realize that these are the outward manifestations of wrong thinking—fear, ignorance, or sin. Then during the winter my eyes became very inflamed and sore. I was working all day under electric light, which seemed to make this condition worse, and it continued for some weeks. I had worn glasses for many years and realized I must either see the eye specialist again or try Christian Science. I soon saw that I must try Christian Science first, and although very shy of going to a stranger, I telephoned a practitioner whose address had been given me at the Reading Room I frequented. I was surprised to hear a familiar voice at the other end of the telephone and much encouraged on arriving at the practitioner's office to find a friend.
I listened to the reassuring words and loving promise of prayerful help, and on the train journey home I found I could read without glasses. But still my eyes remained very sore and inflamed, and this I explained to the practitioner two days later. I was asked to study the words of Jesus (Mark 8:18), "Having eyes, see ye not?" and it was explained that vision is spiritual perception. Complete healing came within a week of my first request for help, I could see perfectly even the smallest print without glasses and have never worn them since.
Soon after this I had two proofs of this healing. First I addressed for a friend several hundred envelopes from a telephone directory, and this I was easily able to do at night without the use of glasses. Then I had a special graph to do in the office where I worked. This necessitated working with very minute details, and several colleagues wondered how I could possibly see to do it.
