EVERY NEED IS MET

Students of Christian Science are familiar with the quotation from page 494 of "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy, "Divine Love always has met and always will meet every human need," for this quotation is on the walls of many Christian Science church edifices. But do we all grasp the deep meaning of this quotation?

Some students, although healed of several ailments, may have one or more which still persist. Others may obtain fine positions, as a result of Christian Science demonstration, but then complain that they have a hard time getting along with someone in the office. Incomplete eradication of error in human experience shows that the full import of the quotation has not been grasped and utilized, regardless of how familiar the words may be. No doubt such students rejoice that many of their needs have been met through realization of Love's power, but the quotation says "every human need," not just some needs. Then wherein lies the difficulty?

May it not be that the quotation is thought of as a motto, rather than as a statement of a spiritual fact to be proved in its entirety and to be loved and lived? Merely inscribed on a wall it can do nothing. Or if stated thoughtlessly it remains equally ineffective. Mankind's need is first of all for spiritual understanding. Divine Love must be lived—engraved on our hearts— and must become a reality to us. For it is only divine Love, which we reflect, that can free us or others from limitation and discord.
