BUT THERE WAS NO SWORD IN HIS HAND

Every Bible student is familiar with the account of David and Goliath as recorded in the seventeenth chapter of I Samuel. When this account appears in our Lesson-Sermons in the Christian Science Quarterly, we may think it hardly worth our taking the time to read it again because we already know the story. But if it is studied with the expectation of an added unfoldment of enlightenment and inspiration to gain the divine message, we shall not ponder it in vain.

As we study the dramatic situation of a mere boy courageously going forth unafraid to meet the Goliath of the Philistines, "a man of war from his youth," we pause in grateful wonder at the power of Truth and Love to sustain and perpetuate the trust, courage, strength, and assurance which Mind imparts and which its idea, man, continuously receives. Mind's impartation to man must be understood and utilized to the glory of God and be a blessing to mankind. The Christ-message must be cherished in consciousness, but never hidden there. Let us rejoice that a purified, spiritualized consciousness radiates the light of Truth which dispels the darkness of the material senses.

David cherished in his heart a trust in the power of his God which Truth imparted to him, and he went forth bravely to meet the Philistine, who was enraged because a mere boy, without armor, had come out to fight him; and he "cursed David by his gods." But it was Truth alone that prevailed, for the narrative states that "there was no sword in the hand of David."
