THE BASIS OF HEALING

The irrefutable evidence that Christian Science is a divinely inspired revelation is seen in the healing of countless thousands of individuals of sin and disease and their restoration to lives of health, usefulness, and happiness. This is the proof of its divine origin. Like the works of Jesus and his disciples, these healings appear mysterious and puzzling to the average human being, but they constitute the certain proof and indication of the ever-operative Christ, Truth. These healings proclaim the unmistakable evidence of spiritual law, a law which must be eventually recognized as divinely natural.

Jesus understood fully the impersonal and eternal nature of the Christ and its healing power. He said (John 5:30) "I can of mine own self do nothing." and again (John 5:17), "My Father worketh hitherto, and I work." Peter also declared the impersonal Christ as the basis of his healing when, interrogated by the priests, the scribes, and the rulers of the synagogues, he declared (Acts 4:8-10), "Ye rulers of the people, and elders of Israel, If we this day be examined of the good deed done to the impotent man, by what means he is made whole; be it known unto you all, and to all the people of Israel, that by the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth, whom ye crucified, whom God raised from the dead, even by him doth this man stand here before you whole."

Referring to this same point, Mary Baker Eddy, the revelator of Christian Science, writes in her textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" (p. 138): "It was now evident to Peter that divine. Life, Truth, and Love, and not a human personality, was the healer of the sick and a rock, a firm foundation in the realm of harmony. On this spiritually scientific basis Jesus explained his cures, which appeared miraculous to outsiders. He showed that diseases were cast out neither by corporeality, by materia medica, nor by hygiene, but by the divine Spirit, casting out the errors of mortal mind. The supremacy of Spirit was the foundation on which Jesus built."
