OUR ONLY PARENT

Christian Science teaches that our only Parent is God. We originate in God, who is the Father and Mother of man. In the first chapter of the book of Genesis, wherein the spiritual creation is revealed, the word used for God in the ancient Hebrew text is Elohim. This word is plural, hence the significance of the statement (Gen. 1:26), "And God said. Let us make man in our image, after our likeness." God could declare Himself "us" because He is both Father and Mother, and His creation includes man as made in His image and likeness, both male and female.

Our Leader, Mary Baker Eddy, writes in the Christian Science textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" (p. 588), "There is but one I, or Us, but one divine Principle, or Mind, governing all existence; man and woman unchanged forever in their individual characters, even as numbers which never blend with each other, though they are governed by one Principle."

It is natural that inheritance should play an important part in our experience. But this inheritance is not material; it is spiritual. If we accept a material origin as real, then it follows that we accept a material heritage as a reality. In this heritage may be found the faults as well as the virtues of those we regard as our earthly ancestors. With such acceptance held in thought it is not surprising that we seem to become the victims of many undesirable traits of character and of unhappy experiences.
