HE THAT SERVETH

(Luke 22:27)

Before each man he knelt to wash
The dusty, weary feet—
This Son of God, whose unselfed love
Made common duties sweet.

This is the standard set by him
Two thousand years ago;
And still it stands unchallenged, for
Each heart to find and know.

And still the promise brightly glows,
Through all the changing days,
That happiness in service lies,
Down humble, unselfed ways.

So each must learn to lose himself
In Love's wide brotherhood,
Where he who serves is he who shares
In universal good.
