I was brought up in a family...

I was brought up in a family whose religious beliefs were set forth in "do as we say and question not." I remember well how an older brother and I, when we reached the teen age, began to question the religion in which we had been brought up. Of course we had to form what might be called a small underground movement. We attended many of the Protestant churches, hoping to hear a rebuttal of the things we had been taught to believe. This was about 1895. Science and Health by Mary Baker Eddy had been published some twenty years before and was beginning to be felt in the sermons of the other churches; I did not then know what was causing the awakening.

Not until I became a student of Christian Science did I realize the prophetic truth of Mrs. Eddy's statement on page 570 of Science and Health, "Millions of unprejudiced minds—simple seekers for Truth, weary wanderers, athirst in the desert—are waiting and watching for rest and drink." Here was the call to an unprejudiced mind—to me; here was the answer to my years of seeking. Through the kindness of two friends I was invited to a Christian Science lecture. Following this beautiful experience I met a Christian Scientist, who later became my wife. We were blessed with two children, who had the great privilege of attending the Christian Science Sunday School.

I have had many healings since coming into Christian Science. The desire for tobacco and intoxicants left me over twenty years ago. Once I sprained my ankle while running to catch a streetcar. Christian Science help was asked for, and I was able to go to the office the next morning, completely healed.
