"FORGIVE US OUR DEBTS"
Years ago there was a law in many countries which committed a person to the debtors' prison if he could not pay his creditors. Here the unfortunate person, many times the head of a family, remained until his relatives or friends could pay his debts and release him. This often took years, for the members of the family, deprived of their bread-winner, were usually unequipped to earn money, and it was hard for them to pay for even their own needs. The debtors' prison is an example of mortal mind's willingness to condemn, but unwillingness to heal.
Today we still continue to imprison ourselves and our fellow men in the false concepts which we hold of man as material and subject to sin and disease, when, in reality, man is altogether spiritual and above frailty of any sort. Holding anyone in thought as hateful, selfish, dishonest, and so on restricts and prevents one from expressing the Godlike qualities belonging to His image and revealed to the human consciousness through the Christ. Christian Science teaches us how to escape and to help others to escape from the bondage of such wrong thinking and step forth into the glorious freedom which God has established for His children.
In the Christian Science textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures," Mary Baker Eddy writes (pp. 476, 477): "Jesus beheld in Science the perfect man, who appeared to him where sinning mortal man appears to mortals. In this perfect man the Saviour saw God's own likeness, and this correct view of man healed the sick." He employed the same method in destroying sin and in raising the dead. Our obligation to our neighbor is to see him as our Father-Mother God sees him. The Bible declares (Rom. 13:8), "Owe no man any thing, but to love one another: for he that loveth another hath fulfilled the law."
