After my father passed on, I had a lot of worry and many disappointments and also became very nervous. I often thought that life was not worth living. My employer recommended to me a doctor who specialized in nervous conditions. He gave me a thorough examination and told me to enter a hospital for a week or ten days, which I did. He took several X rays and gave me some medicine, also recommended a diet. I took this medicine for three days, but my condition grew worse.

In the apartment house where I lived, I became acquainted with a young man who was a Christian Scientist, and he asked me if I should like to attend a Christian Science lecture. I enjoyed the lecture very much. It aroused in me a desire to get a clearer and better understanding of God.

I bought the textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy, together with the Bible. As I read, I came upon this statement on page 494 of Science and Health: "Divine Love always has met and always will meet every human need." The thought came, What about the old remedies? But Truth prevailed, and I took all the material remedies I had and threw them away.
