A LAW UNTO ONESELF

Every Christian Science healing is proof that the individual is a law unto himself, is independent of the tyranny of material laws and worldwide beliefs; that man is spiritual and is governed by God alone. Christian Science heals disease regardless of the so-called laws of matter involved, because it exposes the mythical nature of the unstable mortal sense of life and awakens its students to demonstrate man's indestructible existence in God.

Christian Science explains material law as general belief and rebukes the delusion that the mercy and justice of God are unable to cope with it and silence its claim to power. Mary Baker Eddy says in "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" (p.229): "By universal consent, mortal belief has constituted itself a law to bind mortals to sickness, sin, and death. This customary belief is misnamed material law, and the individual who upholds it is mistaken in theory and in practice." And she adds the following powerful conclusion: "The so-called law of mortal mind, conjectural and speculative, is made void by the law of immortal Mind, and false law should be trampled under foot."

Those under the seeming control of general belief are often consciously, as well as unconsciously, upholding it. They fail to recognize and challenge the deep-rooted delusion that life is dependent upon flesh, and they consciously submit to the universal fallacy that death is inevitable. Neither do they express the innocency that spiritual power requires if one is to be a law unto himself. Christ Jesus rebuked the thought of his times, calling it "an evil and adulterous generation" (Matt. 12:39); and he commended the men of Nineveh, who repented of their sins at the preaching of Jonas.
