THE POWER OF LOVE

There is a saying, "The rock that resists a crowbar gives way to the roots of a tender vine." The one who rebels at coldness, indifference, or hatred will respond to the touch of love. Kindness, tenderness, courtesy, soften the hardness in human consciousness and guide it to the spiritual understanding that "God is love," as John said (I John 4:16), and that "he that dwelleth in love dwelleth in God, and God in him."

The purpose of divine Love is to bless. Man, being the reflection of Love, must be loving. Real love is not emotional or sentimental, but understanding and compassionate. One does not truly love another to satisfy some selfish whim or to get some special favor. One loves because his heart is filled with love. One who really loves never says one thing and thinks another. He is honest and sincere. He does not condone evil, but forgives it, for he sees the unreality of evil and the allness of good, God.

Jesus truly loved all, as he proved when he forgave those who persecuted him. Mary Baker Eddy proved that she loved all mankind when, in spite of hatred and malice, she kept on working to give Christian Science to the world and to found a movement which would continually bless. The real test of love is forgiveness of those, who misunderstand one's efforts and treat one unkindly. Impersonalizing this treatment, seeing it as evil's counterfeit of Love's ever-present blessedness, one persists in loving and rises in spiritual understanding. "Love is the liberator," our Leader writes on page 225 of "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures," and there is nothing that Love cannot heal. The thought which becomes loving is receptive to Love's healing power. Love attracts the sick, the weary, and the sinning to it for healing and comfort. In the healing work one forgets himself; his problems are solved; his health is improved; his happiness and peace are secure.
