DIVINE LAW AND HUMAN
"Science is neither a law of matter nor of man. It is the unerring manifesto of Mind, the law of God, its divine Principle" (Miscellaneous Writings, p. 22). In this statement Mary Baker Eddy shows clearly that the law of God is Science. To understand law, then, makes it necessary to understand Science.
Referring to the naming of her discovery, Mrs. Eddy says in "Science and Health with Key to the Scripture" (p. 127): "The terms Divine Science, Spiritual Science, Christ Science or Christian Science, or Science alone, she employs interchangeably, according to the requirements of the context. These synonymous terms stand for everything relating to God, the infinite, supreme, eternal Mind. It may be said, however, that the term Christian Science relate especially to Science as applied to humanity." It is readily seen from this statement that the particular purpose of Christian Science is to show the application of divine law to the human need and thus to establish God's government on earth.
One student of Christian Science found great joy in demonstrating God's control of human affairs. She was called in the small hours of the night to work for a friend who seemed to be passing on. She replied that she would come at once, but was told that she would not reach the patient in time. Nevertheless she set out, driving as rapidly as possible to the home of her friend. When she reached an intersection, she saw that the traffic light was red. There was no traffic at that hour, and her first thought was that she would go ahead in spite of the light. But because her consciousness was filled with truth— for she had been holding to the fact of Life and man's inseparability from it—she heard an angel voice saying (Matt. 5:17), "Think not that I am come to destroy the law or the prophets: I am not come to destroy, but to fulfil."
