THE PILLAR OF OUR FAITH

Speaking of faith, an internationally known physicist recently wrote, "The two great pillars upon which all human well-being and human progress rest are (1) the spirit of religion, and (2) the spirit of science, or knowledge." He further stated, "The supreme personal and individual opportunity of everyone, without exception. is with respect to the first."

On page 124 of her textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures," Mary Baker Eddy says in part, "Physical science (so-called) is human knowledge,—a law of mortal mind, a blind belief, a Samson shorn of his strength." And answering the question, "How would you define Christian Science?" she says (Rudimental Divine Science, p. 1), "As the law of God, the law of good, interpreting and demonstrating the divine Principle and rule of universal harmony." Because it is based upon unerring Principle, Christian Science unifies the spirit of religion and the spirit of science. It bestows on humanity and on the individual limitless opportunities for progress and well-being.

The Christian Scientist's faith is not grounded in human knowledge: it is based upon the law of God. hen his consciousness is filled with the desire to express more love, to do more for his fellow man, he knows that this desire rests upon that which is in accord with the dictionary definition of the word "pillar"—"a firm, upright, insulated support"—the power of divine, infinite Love, which upholds and protects from all error and materiality.
