Letters to the Press from Christian Science Committees on Publication

Journal Herald

Philip Hardy Simpson, Committee on Publication for Devonshire, England Journal Herald, Barnstaple

Your issue of recent date carries the report of an inquest on a woman, thirty-five years of age, who had elected to rely on the ministrations of Christian Science. Notwithstanding the very fair and considerate summing up of the case by the coroner, the jury added a rider that, in their view, people suffering from major illnesses were ill-advised to take treatment other than from qualified medical practitioners.

The woman had been under medical treatment for a considerable time. She was on a visit from home when she became seriously ill. A doctor who was called to see her agreed, according to the report, that it was desirable that the patient should continue medical treatment.
