Recently, while studying the meaning of the word "firmament," and knowing that, spiritually discerned, firmament is spiritual understanding, which gives a fixed foundation, I was reminded of a very lovely and comprehensive demonstration of God's goodness, which was the outcome of building on such a firm foundation.

Many years ago, when I did not understand the teachings of Christian Science as I do now, it was necessary for me to start a small business in order to earn my own living. This I did quite fearfully, for I had no money at all, and each step that had to be taken seemed tremendous and sometimes even impossible. The one thing I had to depend on was divine Principle, together with a certain knowledge that the rock was there, and that the building was founded on that rock. Whatever else happened would not concern me, because humanly speaking I had nothing material upon which to rely. A dear friend and practitioner stood by me every step of the way, until, like the fledgling, I could fly alone.

I can never be grateful enough for all the experiences that came my way. Each step unfolded beautifully—although not always easily—and in a progressive manner. Thus "firmament" has a more forceful meaning to me in consequence of these lovely, gradual unfoldments.
