When I was about eighteen...
When I was about eighteen years old, a doctor told me that I could never live a normal life. For several years I had suffered from my back, and now he told me that I could not be cured so I would just have to accustom myself to living quietly and never exerting myself much either at work or at play.
Soon after this I began to study a profession that demanded a great deal of mental and physical activity. The people with whom I was studying were Christian Scientists, and twice during my first six months of work one of them healed me, once of a cold and another time of a painful wrist. I realized that Christian Science had brought the healing, and though I most decidedly did not want to be a Christian Scientist, I bought the textbook. "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mrs. Eddy, so that I could find out more about it.
I read the textbook, fighting every statement I could, and after reading about a hundred pages I found myself exhausted with the battle I was giving myself. When I realized what a foolish thing I had been doing, I turned back to the beginning of the book and started all over again, this time trying to read with an open mind, enjoying the new ideas that I could understand and leaving those I could not until my understanding should increase.
