Engineering and Christian Science

In the Manual of The Mother Church (Art. VIII, Sect. 4) Mary Baker Eddy, the Discoverer and Founder of Christian Science, gives us a beautiful and ever-enlightening prayer, the "Daily Prayer." After quoting Jesus' awakening and far-reaching statement, "Thy kingdom come," she follows with the key to all success in our daily living, "Let the reign of divine Truth, Life, and Love be established in me, and rule out of me all sin; and may Thy Word enrich the affections of all mankind, and govern them!" Just to let God's goodness reign in one's consciousness is to exclude all sense of fear, want, or woe, and to leave no room there for aught but good.

To allow God, divine Mind, to govern each move we make, rather than humanly to take matters in hand as we are often wont to do, is excellent judgment. This "let" method of procedure has been thoroughly tried and proved highly successful in many walks of life by students of Christian Science. The "let" method may mean that one should turn from the beaten path of material outlining to discover the way to live and to live more abundantly.

A rather new student in Christian Science experienced an amazing unfoldment based on spiritual thinking. Many months of exhaustive research failed to disclose a solution to a problem involving an engineering design of a certain piece of machinery. Although much data and experience in the design and building of many pieces of equipment over a period of years were at hand to draw upon, the answers to the rigid material science demands for high productivity and extreme simplicity were not forthcoming. Contrarily, complicated devices were suggested and were the objects of much just criticism. As these persisted in consuming valuable time and drawing materials, prayerful consideration was given to the problem.

The oneness of Mind and the abundance of this ever-bestowing intelligence were dwelt upon. Further the necessity for emptying his thoughts of any false stimulus, with its egotistical subtlety, was realized by the student. Turning to God for his instruction, and applying the scientific spiritual fact that our daily needs are met through spiritual ideas, not human outlining, he was immediately lifted out of the extreme sense of material limitation. An entirely novel arrangement of levers and associated parts was revealed from this scientific dealing with the problem. At first rough sketches were made. Gradually by leaving all to Mind and devoting more undivided attention to the study of the Christian Science textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy, a full and complete design was made, resulting in a most unusual and effectual machine. In fact, this design is today the basis of the mechanism of certain equipment employed on many war fronts in the construction and maintenance of air fields.

Mrs. Eddy knew well the liberating effect of an understanding of God's power. She writes (Science and Health, p. 519), "Human capacity is slow to discern and to grasp God's creation and the divine power and presence which go with it demonstrating its spiritual origin." Again, on page 256, she forcefully states: "All things are created spiritually. Mind, not matter is the creator." Noah did not design, nor did he create, the means whereby he and his family were preserved. Says the Bible, "Thus did Noah; according to all that God commanded him so did he."

The daily walks of life present many opportunities to serve God and mankind in the way of His appointing. We need only to be alert to the facts of being and to remove from our thinking all mortal thought "gadgets." Science, as it gradually unfolds to the human consciousness, lifts us higher and higher from the supposed material realities to a basis of sound reasoning, and certain clear conclusions emerge: first, that the five physical senses are entirely unreliable and deceptive when applied to the solution of even the simplest daily problems; secondly, that Mind is the creator of all, and all actually is spiritual.

Great is the power behind our thoughts when our thinking is without misapprehension, limitation, or fear, and is emanating from that Mind "which was also in Christ Jesus." How true it is that, as our Leader tells us (ibid., p. 89), "We are all capable of more than we do." In aiming high and holding our aim, we not only prepare the way for further spiritual unfoldment but immediately begin to see results beyond our greatest expectations.

As a direct outcome of the right thinking done in regard to the engineering problem, the student was greatly inspired to make further progress in the study of Christian Science, and, as a consequence, has been able to apply this truth to the accomplishing of other work beneficial to mankind. Confidently, those who would serve in the grand cause of good and abide in the realization that all right ideas proceed from the one omnipotent Mind, God, find the way to overcome the interferences set up by so-called mortal laws.

There is a provable calculus based on Spirit, a scientifically sure method of solution for all problems. No health law of mortals, no failure, no inharmony, no sin can annul this method or interfere with its successful application.
