It is with gratitude that I tell...
It is with gratitude that I tell you of "good tidings of great joy," for the truths of Christian Science have led me to "where the young child was" (the spiritual sense of being), and freed me from much bondage.
Christian Science was introduced into our home by my grandparents, who were then nearly fourscore years of age. My grandmother had served as a nurse in the Civil War, so the family was amazed when almost overnight she swept away all the bottles of medicine that lined her dresser and from that day on relied absolutely on Christian Science.
My first definite healing in Christian Science was release from severe attacks of sick headache, from which I had suffered since early childhood. My parents believed that my studies were too much for me, and they always expected me to have a bad attack at the end of the school week. I generally lived up to their expectations. Strong drugs were administered which gave me only temporary relief and usually left me in a weakened condition.
After I married and had three children to care for these headaches became a great burden to me, and it was about this time that I became really interested in Christian Science. I then decided to discontinue all drugs, but for some reason I was never willing to call on a practitioner for help during one of these attacks. One day, after I had been forced to go to bed, I was reading Science and Health by Mrs. Eddy, and came to these words on page 420: "If students do not readily heal themselves, they should early call an experienced Christian Scientist to aid them. If they are unwilling to do this for themselves, they need only to know that error cannot produce this unnatural reluctance." I pondered these words for a few moments. Then I went to a telephone, called a practitioner and asked for help. Half an hour later I realized that I was entirely well. I dressed and prepared dinner for my family, and to this day have not had a return of the difficulty. This healing took place over sixteen years ago.
In our family we have experienced healings of scarlet fever, rheumatism, and pneumonia through the application of Christian Science and with the aid of practitioners. Business problems which seemed insurmountable have been worked out in beautiful and unexpected ways. Truly, the Christian Scientist can say with the Psalmist, "The Lord is my shepherd; I shall not want."— (Mrs.) Helen D. Doolittle, Salem, Oregon.
