Our Second Front

"There isn't going to be any war." When dark clouds were gathering on the horizon of the world affairs before the opening of the present World War, how often we heard this soothing slogan! Such a phrase proved an empty catchword, lulling those who used it and those who heard it into a state of mental inertia or complacency with regard to threatened danger. This is the modus of evil or animal magnetism, of which Mary Baker Eddy writes in the Christian Science textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" (p. 103): "As named in Christian Science, animal magnetism or hypnotism is the specific term for error, or mortal mind. It is the false belief that mind is in matter, and is both evil and good; that evil is as real as good and more powerful. This belief has not one quality of Truth."

The experienced student of Christian Science knows that when evil suggestions present themselves to his thought for recognition and acceptance, claiming prestige, power, and reality, they must be dealt with here, in the mental realm, however much they may seem to be over there.
