In 1930, while living in a city...
In 1930, while living in a city on the Pacific Coast, I had reached such a stage of physical incapacity that chronic invalidism was thought to be inevitable. Within eighteen months I had undergone three operations to relieve a serious chest and lung condition, resulting from empyema and pneumonia.
I had been under the very best of care and had the finest surgeons and doctors available, but the most they could promise was that if I would undergo a fourth operation, which they said was absolutely necessary, I might find temporary relief. I was warned, however, that this operation would be a dangerous one. The future seemed very dark, for I was also told that I could probably never live in a cold or rigorous climate again, and there were many other ominous and gloomy warnings. I was advised that the operation must be performed within twelve hours; in fact, arrangements had already been made at the hospital.
My knowledge of Christian Science was slight, but in this hour of need it seemed to me that God was my only help. It did not take very much urging from a friend, who knew about Christian Science and who had recommended it to me, for me to ask for help from a Christian Science practitioner. I realized that if I were to rely on God I must sever all ties with materia medica. Before the practitioner had arrived at my bedside, I had dismissed the doctors and a nurse who had been active on my case for over a year. These steps may have seemed radical, but I knew then that if my healing was to be a spiritual one I must at least do my part by relying as much as possible upon spiritual means
