Christian Science came to my attention in 1911

Christian Science came to my attention in 1911. I had suffered greatly for years from heart trouble, gallstones, hemorrhoids, and chronic constipation. I was told by eminent physicians that I had only a short time to live. One day, after one of these periods of suffering, I left my work. Upon reaching home I tried to make myself comfortable, but it seemed impossible to do so. Later I took a stroll, and my attention was attracted to our neighbor's garden. While I was admiring its beauty our neighbor approached and asked me why I looked so discouraged. I replied: "I am tired of suffering. The doctors say that due to heart trouble I cannot be operated upon, and, even if an operation were possible, I have not the means to have it." I then went on to tell her that I had no chance whatever to live, and that I contemplated self-destruction as the only way out. While I was telling her of my trials the Christ was present, manifested in patience, compassion, humanity, brotherly love, and hope. I was not conscious at the time of this holy reflection, but later I perceived the light of Christ in proportion as I left matter for things spiritual.

I was requested by our friend to call at her home that evening. She said she had something she wanted to talk over with me. She told me of Christian Science, and gave me my first treatment. That night I had a wonderful sleep and woke up so refreshed that my wife noted a great change in me. Life had begun anew. I continued treatments, and in a very short time was completely healed, gaining sixteen pounds in three week's time.

Five years later, I was healed of gangrene, which was eating into the bone of my ankle. For five weeks I was confined to my bed under a doctor's care, made necessary because of a compensation act. I was told by the physician that I would have to go to a hospital, and would probably be left a cripple. I told the doctor that I was going to take my stand with God. He implied that if I discontinued medical aid I would lose my job and my leg. I knew that, in the truth of being, "it is impossible that man should lose aught that is real, when God is all and eternally his," as stated on page 302 of the Christian Science textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy. Our same dear friend, who is a faithful practitioner, was called on for help. The next day I was up and around. Two days later I was back at my job.
