Because of the numerous blessings God has bestowed...

Because of the numerous blessings God has bestowed upon me in the past, gratitude compels me to refer to some of them, hoping that others may be led to turn to Christian Science. Because "God is no respecter of person," what He has done for me, He will do for all who earnestly seek to know Him aright through the study of the Bible, and of the writings of Mary Baker Eddy, the Discoverer and Founder of Christian Science. No words that I can use could fully express my gratitude for all that He has done for me.

The most outstanding proof that I experienced of God's all-embracing and complete love and protection was during the World War, while I was a soldier in the American army in France and Belgium. While still in the training camp in this country, I had faith that I would go through the war and come out just as well as when I went in. When I actually did set foot in the front-line trenches and found myself at last under fire and facing the supreme test, I not only held to this faith, but completely put myself and my life into God's hands, and practically all fear left me. I realized in a measure something of the truth declared by David in the twenty-third Psalm, "Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil: for thou art with me; thy rod and thy staff they comfort me." An understanding of God, as taught in Christian Science, carried me through the entire war, and I came out without so much as a scratch, although I took part in some of the battles of that awful carnage. At times the bullets, the shrapnel, and the shells literally rained around me on all sides, and still I was never touched, simply because I felt that He was protecting me.

An understanding of Christian Science also prevented me from becoming the victim of any of the many and varied temptations to which a soldier in any war is always subjected, and for this spiritual support and guidance I shall never cease to praise His name. The result of this faith was evidenced again when I came home from France. The ship on which I was traveling was caught in a terrible storm, which started about two hours after we had left the harbor of Brest, France, and lasted for four days and nights. During this time it seemed as if the ship would be lashed to pieces, but a few of us relied on the sustaining power of God, and the ship rode the tempest and came into calm waters.
