All Christian churches have one foundation, the Bible,...

Burlingame Advance

All Christian churches have one foundation, the Bible, composed of the Old and New Testaments. The Christian Science church is no exception, and its Founder, Mary Baker Eddy, who was from childhood a devoted member of a Christian church, was an earnest student of the Bible and founded her church upon its teachings.

After years of invalidism and struggle to gain health and a more practical understanding of God, Mrs. Eddy experienced a remarkable physical healing and spiritual awakening while reading her Bible. Her recovery impressed her so deeply that she resolved to discover how this healing was done. Years of research of the Scriptures and unquestionable proofs of healing by spiritual means, convinced her that the power of God is just as available today as it was in Jesus' time to heal sin and bodily ills. Such healings, she became convinced, followed naturally the increased spirituality which is developed through an understanding of the Scriptures and of the life of Christ Jesus, and are among the evidences of Christian attainment required of a follower of the Master. She found to be true the promise of Jesus, "These signs shall follow them that believe; . . . they shall lay hands on the sick, and they shall recover."

Christian Science makes it plain that Christianity, more than mere profession, involves practical proof. Christian Science is not a speculative theory, but demonstrable Science. Should it be said that there is no provable Science of Life? Christ Jesus' deeds of healing and his overcoming of materiality were scientific demonstrations of divine supremacy. All Christians accept the life of Christ Jesus as the perfect example of Christian living, and Christian Science accepts him as the Way-shower, and points to his teaching as the way by which all human problems may be solved. Christian Science is enabling many seekers for light to find health and spiritual joy which they had not found through the merely literal interpretation of the Scriptures, or through human philosophies.
