Ever-present Light

"Divine Science, the Word of God, saith to the darkness upon the face of error, 'God is All-in-all,' and the light of ever-present Love illumines the universe." These arresting words appear on page 503 of the Christian Science textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy. Today they are as a trumpet call piercing the clouded sense of mankind, to turn men from the darkness of materiality to the illumination of Spirit. Nothing can extinguish or dim this "light of ever-present Love." Walking in this light, no one can stumble, fall, or lose his way. This light illumines and protects; it never endangers. It is the light whereunto no evil can approach. It is universal, confined to no country, no nation, no race. It is Immanuel. "God with us." How may this spiritual light be seen, and by whom, that it may dispel the darkness of ignorance and fear from the earth?

Again, in Science and Health we are told (p. 510), "Truth and Love enlighten the understanding, in whose light shall we see light;' and this illumination is reflected spiritually by all who walk in the light and turn away from a false material sense." And did not Jesus say, "I am the light of the world: he that followeth me shall not walk in darkness, but shall have the light of life"? Here, then, is the manner in which one may find, and walk in, this "light of ever-present Love." It is found by studying and obeying the teachings of Christ Jesus as illumined by Christian Science; and those who walk in this light are those instructed in this Science.

It is this Science, indeed, which enables us to see that these ringing statements of the truth of God's ever-presence and its illuminating power do not express mere religious sentiment or a fear-begotten fervor of worship, but are statements of scientific facts which are to be demonstrated. Each student of Christian Science is privileged and enabled to demonstrate the "light of ever-present Love," wherever he may be, in the blackout of a war-threatened city or in the peaceful fields of the countryside where no alarm is known.
