Emerging from Matter to Spirit
One of the most interesting studies in the life of Christ Jesus is that which deals with his overcoming of materiality, his rising above the false material sense of things, until, finally, he mastered the belief of death and ascended entirely above materiality into the spiritual sense of being. Just before he began his ministry Jesus was tempted of the devil in the wilderness. What was this temptation but the suggestion in various forms that matter is real? Jesus had to face it alone, even as has every mortal. And he overcame it through enlightened understanding gained through the consciousness of God as Spirit, and of his indestructible unity with God.
The Master was constantly aware that, since man is the image and likeness of God, he is spiritual, not material. He was thus able to deny matter and all the phenomena associated therewith. This was the secret of the power he had to heal all manner of disease, and to reverse the apparent activity of so-called material law. He knew, moreover, that God is good, that His creation is perfect, and that therefore an imperfect sense of creation is unreal. This knowledge of the reality of good and of the unreality of the imperfect—evil—brought about all the healing of disease and the overcoming of sin which characterized his ministry. When he overcame death for others and for himself, how clearly he must have realized the eternal nature of Life and the immortal nature of man!
Christian Science makes these things plain. Not a word, not an incident, in the life of the Way-shower but Christian Science explains through its teachings! And by doing so it shows its students how to follow him—how to heal the sick and the sinning as he did; how to overcome so-called material law as he overcame it; how to rise above materiality as he rose above it; how to enter the kingdom of God as he entered it. It shows also how, ultimately, through the understanding of the altogether spiritual nature of man—our spiritual selfhood—we shall lose all belief in matter as real and know ourselves as an individual consciousness, spiritual, perfect, immortal.
