Bibles Notes

[The Biblical citations given in the Christian Science Quarterly are from the Authorized King James Version. The Bible Notes in this column can be used, if deemed necessary, to elucidate some of the words or passages contained in the Bible Lessons.]

"They . . . contemned the counsel of the most High" (Ps. 107:11)—The somewhat archaic word "contemned" means "spurned" or "held in contempt," and when thus understood represents a satisfactory rendering of the original. Moffatt suggests: "They . . . scorned what the Most High enjoined;" and Smith: "They . . . spurned the counsel of the Most High."

"Unto God the Lord belong the issues from death" (Ps. 68:20)—The Hebrew term which is here rendered "issues" can mean, equally literally, "escapes" or "fountains." Thus Moffatt offers the interesting rendering, "Thanks to the Eternal we escape from death."
