The Lectures
Introductions to Lectures
Milwaukee, Wisconsin (Second Church).
Lecturer: Adair Hickman; introduced by Mrs. Hazel J. Blahnik, who said:—
Mary Baker Eddy, the Discoverer and Founder of Christian Science, gave to the world our textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures," which, when studied in conjunction with the Bible, unfolds spiritual truths that meet all human needs. The truths found in these two books inspire and guide one, no matter what problem presents itself to him.
Some time ago I sustained a fractured collarbone. I reached out for help and inspiration, and the following verse from Hebrews unfolded: "The word of God is quick, and powerful, and sharper than any twoedged sword, piercing even to the dividing asunder of soul and spirit, and of the joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart." I also found in Science and Health (p. 14) the spiritual correlative of this passage: "Become conscious for a single moment that Life and intelligence are purely spiritual,—neither in nor of matter,—and the body will then utter no complaints. If suffering from a belief in sickness, you will find yourself suddenly well." After a few moments of prayerful and sincere contemplation of these facts, I found myself completely healed.
TORONTO, ONTARIO, CANADA (First Church).
Lecturer: Robert Stanley Ross; introduced by Mrs. Ida Winifred Fahey, who said:—
When I was a growing girl I was seeking for an understanding of God which would answer the many questions arising in my awakening consciousness—questions relative to the origin of man, to the teachings and especially to the healings of Jesus. I became a member of an orthodox church, but though I tried to adhere to and understand its teachings, my questions remained unanswered.
Later in my life my husband's mother, who had, as the result of an accident, been unable to walk for two years, decided to have Christian Science treatment. She did so, and was healed. The healing was practically instantaneous and was permanent.
As a result of this healing I commenced the study of the Christian Science textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy, in conjunction with the Bible, and I found the answers to all my questions. Since then I have experienced and witnessed many healings in Christian Science; in fact, it has met my every need over a period of many years.
Many in the audience this evening have experienced healing in Christian Science; some may be here hoping to find the solution of a problem; and again there may be others present who are attending a Christian Science lecture for the first time. But in any case we have all come with hope in our hearts; we have all come in the spirit of expectancy; we have all come seeking good. Surely this must be the good soil where the seed may fall and bring forth "an hundredfold."
GREAT NECK, NEW YORK (First Church).
Lecturer: Judge Samuel W. Greene; introduced by Mrs. Margaret Matters, who said:—
To the majority of people, world condition today would seem to make peace, harmony, and good will remote abstractions; whereas evil, discord, dissension, and war would seem to be present realities. Christian Science pierces this dark seeming with the light of intelligence, Truth, and Love, enabling us to see the fact that heaven of good is actually on earth, within us, around us, filling all space. In "Miscellaneous Writings" (p. 100) Mary Baker Eddy, the Discoverer and Founder of Christian Science, speaks of the "coincidence of the divine with the human" as "the acme of Christian Science;" and she adds: "Pure humanity, friendship, home, the interchange of love, bring to earth a foretaste of heaven. They unite terrestrial and celestial joys, and crown them with blessing infinite." A Christian Science lecture gives us a glimpse of these "blessings infinite" and introduces to many the way of Christianly scientific thinking, whereby each one may lay claim to, and actually experience, the joy, harmony, health, security, friendship, and love which are indeed heaven on earth.
BATON ROUGE, LOUISIANA (First Church).
Lecturer: James G. Rowell; introduced by Glenn H. Holloway, who said:—
The value of education is very generally appreciated today, but there still remains a diversity of opinions among men as to what constitutes true education. Christian Science gives its answer to this question in its first tenet, which reads (Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures by Mary Baker Eddy, p. 497), "As adherents of Truth, we take the inspired Word of the Bible as our sufficient guide to eternal Life."
We are told in Proverbs, "The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom: and the knowledge of the holy is understanding." Christ Jesus not only taught and demonstrated the value of spiritual healing himself, but told his disciples, "He that believeth on me, the works that I do shall he do also."
I can personally testify to the fulfillment of these prophecies today through the application of the truth which was taught and demonstrated by Christ Jesus and discovered by Mary Baker Eddy. I have not taken a drop of medicine in the last twenty-eight years, but have relied entirely upon Christian Science, which has healed all my ills, among which were heart trouble, on account of which I had been refused life insurance; varicose veins, pronounced incurable; a crossed eye, straightened in ten day's treatment; a broken bone in my leg, healed overnight; and many minor troubles, too numerous to mention.
How important it is, then, to learn more of this healing truth! Mrs. Eddy says on page 340 of Science and Health, "One infinite God, good, unifies men and nations; constitutes the brotherhood of man; ends wars; fulfils the Scripture, 'Love thy neighbor as thyself;' annihilates pagan and Christian idolatry,—whatever is wrong in social, civil, criminal, political, and religious codes; equalizes the sexes; annuls the curse on man, and leaves nothing that can sin, suffer, be punished or destroyed."
