Item of Interest
Frequently there come to the attention of Christian Science practitioners and Readers in Christian Science churches advertisements of so-called helps in their work, in the form of outlines, citations, or lists of selections that someone has considered suitable for use by these workers. Those who are responsible for carrying on the public practice of Christian Science and the conduct of services in Christian Science churches need to be particularly alert to avoid falling in with the undesirable present-day tendency to delegate or leave to others the individual effort which is one's own responsibility.
To the First Readers in our churches and societies falls the responsibility of choosing Scriptural readings for the Sunday services, and the selections for reading at the Wednesday evening meetings. They also choose the benedictions for the close of the Sunday services. When the selections are the result of demonstration through prayer and inspiration, they will not be stereotyped and cold, but will glow with the radiant vitality that expresses "the fruit of the Spirit."
Excellent benedictions suitable for reading at the conclusion of Sunday services are to be found in the Scriptural writings attributed to St. Paul, as well as elsewhere in both the Old and the New Testament. They should be concise, continuous statements, not made by combining verses or parts of verses from different books of the Bible, and should be a fitting close for the Lesson-Sermon in the Christian Science Quarterly which has just been read.
