A Closer Walk with God
Christ Jesus knew that the only way in which he could bring the kingdom of God to earth was by helping men to know and to love God. He proved the power of God, Life, to heal and bless. He walked closely with God. His was the highway of Love. As others turn from the by-ways of error, ill-health, sin, and lack, and follow the signposts erected by the Way-shower, they find the higher road of spiritual understanding, where they may have a closer walk with God.
Mary Baker Eddy has written in the Christian Science textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" (p. 3), "To understand God is the work of eternity, and demands absolute consecration of thought, energy, and desire." He who would walk with God must put the things of God first; he must consecrate his endeavors to the Father's business. No matter what difficulties may seem to arise, the nature of the goal and the steps to be taken in reaching it should remain paramount in thought. At every step in our closer walk with God we discern more clearly our sonship with our Father-Mother God, divine Love.
A pure and loving heart is needed. When Jesus saw Nathanael coming to him, he said, "Behold an Israelite indeed, in whom is no guile!" Jesus' purity and love drew multitudes unto him, and he knew that his followers greatly needed these qualities also. Those who study the writings of Mary Baker Eddy perceive that her desire for purity and love led her from the lowlands of mortal mind to the heights of divine Mind, where she received the revelation of Christian Science.
