Christian Science came to me in the summer of 1931,...

Christian Science came to me in the summer of 1931, in answer to prayer that I might be led to a practical religion. At this time I was given some Christian Science periodicals. I read the literature, began to attend Wednesday evening testimony meetings and Sunday services, and borrowed, and later purchased, the textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy, from a Reading Room. I found that the services, periodicals, and textbook more than satisfied my search for a demonstrable religion.

In the summer of 1933 my testing time came. Two months before our last son was born, the doctor I had engaged to attend me at the time of the birth pronounced a discordant condition acute appendicitis and advised that an operation was necessary. The operation coupled with pregnancy made the outcome uncertain. There was a possibility that either the baby or I, or perhaps both, might not live. The physician left, promising to bring a surgeon to examine me the next day before making arrangements to operate.

I decided that if Christian Science could help others it could help me. So I gave my husband a list of practitioners, taken from The Christian Science Journal, who lived in our town and told him to bring the one who was nearest to me. This he did, although against his own wishes. This dear practitioner told me that the only operation I needed was the operation of Truth in my consciousness. She made me see clearly that God made man perfect and could not make anything imperfect. The healing was instantaneous; the pain left before she had gone. I slept through the night, and the following morning arose and dressed as usual, entirely free. The doctors were surprised to find me up and around, and upon examination the surgeon found me in normal condition, much to the surprise of the family physician, who insisted upon examining me himself after the surgeon had done so. At the time of the birth, which was harmonious, I had Science treatment.

Another outstanding healing took place when our eldest boy was hit in the jaw by a fast ball while he was standing on the base line in a ball game one Sunday afternoon. He was knocked unconscious for a few moments, and the kind men who brought him home wanted to take him to the hospital, but knowing I would worry he had asked to be brought home. These men said the jaw was broken. As soon as we were alone I called the practitioner, and work was taken up immediately. On the following Wednesday afternoon the boy returned to school. On the Tuesday following the incident, on account of family opposition, I had a doctor examine the jaw, and he pronounced it in correct position and needing no attention. Three or four of the boy's teeth were also loosened at this time, but he suffered no aftereffects whatever.

I have witnessed many healings and also protection from danger and so-called contagious diseases, sometimes through my own understanding and sometimes with the aid of a practitioner. My second eldest boy was healed of inflammatory rheumatism in less than a week. The condition never returned, although the physician said it would appear if the boy got his feet wet or the weather was damp.

Words cannot express my gratitude for Christian Science, for the periodicals, the church services, the practitioner who lovingly and patiently helps us onward and upward whenever needed, and for our beloved Leader, Mrs. Eddy, who so unselfishly labored that she might give the world this beautiful truth. It is my sincere desire to be worthy of the name Christian Scientist and to grow daily in the understanding and application of this wonderful truth.
