Prayer

Addressing his disciples on the all-important subject of prayer, Christ Jesus said, "What things soever ye desire, when ye pray, believe that ye receive them, and ye shall have them." This indicates that true prayer comprises both desire and fulfillment. Indeed, we learn in Christian Science that genuine prayer is the realization of the presence of God, infinite Mind, and His infinite manifestation.

Prayer is properly a theme of the deepest interest to every Christian. Mary Baker Eddy, the Discoverer and Founder of Christian Science, has devoted the first chapter of her textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures," to this vital subject, and perhaps no chapter in the book is read more frequently or is more dearly loved by its readers than this clear and concise exposition of how to pray aright. Brilliant scholars, of varying religious beliefs and creeds, have conceded this chapter on Prayer by Mrs. Eddy to be one of the most profound and most consistent treatises to be found on the subject. Certainly all sincere seekers for Truth may ponder its pages with profit. Moreover, a definite promise of spiritual progress can be held out to those who practice the truths it so simply sets forth.

True prayer is the door to spiritual treasures—treasures of purity, innocence, health, bliss, true substance, and success. Since all may avail themselves of the privilege of prayer, nothing can prevent us from making our own the matchless inheritance of illimitable good. God's gifts to man are spiritual, and it is for blessings such as these that we should pray: wisdom, obedience, peace, joy, and harmony. An ardent yearning for growth Godward is true prayer. Such spiritual desire, whether voiced or silently cherished, reaches our heavenly Father, and is unfailingly rewarded in a clearer understanding of God and man. The sincerity of our prayer will be attested in our lives by a deeper love for God and humanity, accompanied by demonstration.
