Divine Guidance
Among the many blessings which Christian Science brings to us is freedom from a burdened sense of responsibility about members of our family. The earnest student accepts Mrs. Eddy's statement (Unity of Good, pp. 3, 4) that "God is our helper. He pities us. He has mercy upon us, and guides every event of our careers." And he knows that this applies to his relatives as well as to himself. This knowledge brings peace to the one worrying over the welfare of his loved ones.
This was proved in the experience of a Christian Scientist who was greatly distressed when her husband informed her that he desired to quit his business and seek a position in another city. So far as she could see there was no reason for the change. His business was prospering; all his relationships were harmonious, Moreover, she knew of no position open for him at that time. However, the husband, also a Christian Scientist, realized that he had gone as far as he could in that particular situation, and that if he wished to progress he must make a change. All her arguments could not alter his determination to make a change, and she became very unhappy.
Realizing that unhappiness is an indication of wrong thinking, she decided to study "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mrs. Eddy, to clear her own thought. After reading for some time, she declared that she was willing to see God's will done in this, as in every situation. Her humility was rewarded by her suddenly recalling a passage in Dr. Lyman P. Powell's book, "Mary Baker Eddy: A Life Size Protrait." He relates that our Leader asked some of her students, "Can a Christian Scientist control the weather?" They replied that he could; whereupon Mrs. Eddy stated: "They can't and they don't. They can't, but God can and does." She applied this to her problem, for she knew that God controls everything in the one creation. Then she said to herself: "Can a Christian Scientist control the members of her family? She can't and she doesn't. But God can and He does."
