Lecturer: Frank Bell; introduced by Bliss Knapp, who said:—

The Pilgrim Fathers came to this country for religious freedom. As they approached the shores of Massachusetts Bay, they drew up a set of rules for their own government. This covenant was neither autocratic nor democratic, but it placed their civil government under the immediate direction of divine law. Such a form of government is known as a theocracy, and it was doubtless the first theocracy since the Hebrew Commonwealth instituted by Moses.
