Leveling Wealth

It is easy for men to find faults in human systems, human relationships, and all human affairs. Prominent among such faults is the inequality of wealth. Therefore many books have been written and many fervid and ofttimes fiery speeches have been delivered on the subject of this inequality. Sincere students of economics have devised and promulgated a multitude of widely differing prescriptions and plans, theories and formulas, each of which, according to the claims of its proponents, would correct, or at least alleviate, the injustice and ills of the world's economic system. Generally speaking, it may be said that all of these reformatory and regulatory propositions would attempt by legislative means to change and correct conditions of inequality and injustice, which, however, are but expressions or indications of phases of the carnal or mortal mind.

Christian Science, the Science of Christianity, teaches us how to recognize and deal with the underlying mental causes in connection with every untoward, unjust, or discordant condition, whether it be seen as a sick business or a sick body, a discordant home or a distraught nation, an unbalanced budget or an unbalanced mentality. Through Christian Science we learn that every condition in human experience is primarily mental; and best of all we learn that God, the divine Principle of the universe and man, is the one infinite Mind, and therefore is the source of all true thoughts and ideas.

Consistent with its premise that God, good, divine Truth and Love, is the creator of all that is veritable and real, Christian Science classifies as error, falsity, whatever does not bespeak divine Principle and its harmony, justice, and perfect government. Thus the Discoverer and Founder of Christian Science, Mary Baker Eddy, was inspired to indite the following immense statement in her textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" (p. 469): "The exterminator of error is the great truth that God, good, is the only Mind, and that the supposititious opposite of infinite Mind—called devil or evil—is not Mind, is not Truth, but error, without intelligence or reality." Here, then, is the Christianly scientific remedy for all the ills of individuals, and all the woes of the world. Mrs. Eddy's declarations and instructions are directly in line with Christ Jesus' teaching found in his marvelous Sermon on the Mount: "Take no thought for your life, what ye shall eat, or what ye shall drink; nor yet for your body, what ye shall put on. Is not the life more than meat, and the body than raiment? ... But seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you."
