Being Useful to the Cause of Christian Science
A multitude of people throughout the world have been healed, regenerated, and blessed in many ways by the divine influence of Christian Science. Their gratitude and joy have caused them to embrace and follow the truth as revealed by Mary Baker Eddy, and in due course to unite with The Mother Church and with one of its branches.
More often than not, this gratitude brings with it a sincere desire to be useful to the Cause of Christian Science. Occasionally, however, someone may accept the suggestion that one cannot be very useful without holding some church office. This suggestion is erroneous. One's usefulness to the Cause is not dependent upon his holding an office, but upon his correct thinking and right living. The more one imbibes and expresses the divine qualities of obedience, gratitude, consecration, honesty, humility, loving-kindness, alertness, fidelity, and the like, the more he understands how to serve in the Christian Science movement.
The prayer and meditation of an earnest Christian Scientist is far-reaching, and is beneficial to our Cause. Devout prayer is needed by the rank and file of our members, as well as by those who may be serving in the forefront of the movement. "The effectual fervent prayer of a righteous man availeth much." Unselfed service to our Cause does much to counteract the influence of animal magnetism, which appears to operate through the depraved traits, such as false ambition, jealousy, envy, and greed.
