"The father and the mother of the maiden"

As from the fitful sea the Lord returns,
The sick folk press him close, and many poor,
With others sad and weary, seek his help.
Most urgent in the throng, a ruler comes
Pleading a piteous case, his only child—
A girl of twelve—of whom he now despairs!
The crowd comes closer and one reaching out
Touches the Master's garment for relief;
Then loving words, "Thy faith hath made thee whole,"
Comfort a woman's heart. Yet on he goes
And though the words are whispered through the press,
The child is dead, why trouble Jesus more?
On, on the Master walks, while words of hope
Fall on the father's ear and bring him peace.
Into the house he comes and with him brings
The father and the mother of the child;
Love also close companions him. His hand
Goes out in kindness while he tenderly,
Yet firmly, calls upon the child to rise.

Thus does the living Christ reveal the way
Each seeking heart must take to prove the truth
Of man's eternal life and health in God.
